Dry in a drawer, parked in distilled water or polished clean with a cloth: three well meant habits, three ways to kill a sensor early.

What you are actually holding

Two delicate parts sit at the bottom of your meter. First the glass membrane: a wafer thin glass bulb whose surface needs a water saturated gel layer to measure at all. Once that layer dries out, the electrode responds sluggishly, drifts, or refuses to calibrate.

Second the junction: a tiny porous spot in the shaft through which the reference side keeps contact with the sample, usually visible as a lighter dot or ring. If it clogs, the circuit collapses, readings become unstable and wander off even though the glass looks perfect.

Both parts need the same thing: ions and moisture. That is exactly what a potassium chloride solution provides.

The most important rule first: never store in distilled water

This is the mistake almost everyone makes once, because it feels right. Distilled and demineralised water is ion poor, which means it wants to take on ions. Leave an electrode in it and the water pulls electrolyte out of the interior through the junction. The reference side depletes, and what you measure afterwards is slowly drifting numbers with no foundation.

Tap water is no solution either: it carries hardness minerals and a pH value of its own that changes the membrane over weeks.

The right answer is a 3 molar potassium chloride solution (3M KCl). It keeps the gel layer moist, the junction clear and the reference side in balance.

Calibration Solutions, pH Meters

Apera 3M KCl electrode storage solution 250ml

<bdi>12,40 €</bdi>
<a href="/en/wp-json/wp/v2/posts/295324?add-to-cart=85412" aria-describedby="woocommerce_loop_add_to_cart_link_describedby_85412" data-quantity="1" class="button product_type_simple add_to_cart_button ajax_add_to_cart" data-product_id="85412" data-product_sku="28APE190316" aria-label="Add to cart: “Apera 3M KCl electrode storage solution 250ml”" rel="nofollow" data-success_message="“Apera 3M KCl electrode storage solution 250ml” What matters is that the bulb and the junction are wetted.

Longer breaks (weeks to months): store the same way, but check the liquid regularly. It evaporates, and every four to six months it should be replaced. A glance at every battery change is enough.

Always upright. The junction has to sit fully in the liquid. Lay the electrode on its side and exactly the spot that matters dries out.

No frost, no radiator. Room temperature is ideal. If the solution freezes, it cracks the glass membrane.

If the electrode has dried out anyway, not all is lost: stand it in KCl solution for a few hours, overnight if in doubt, then recalibrate. After a short dry spell it often recovers fully. After weeks in the dry, some sluggishness usually remains.

Cleaning: dab, do not rub

After every measurement the electrode gets rinsed with distilled water, which is exactly right for rinsing, just not for storing. Then dab it carefully with a soft, lint free cloth.

Rubbing is forbidden for two reasons: it leaves fine scratches in the glass and it charges the membrane statically. A statically charged electrode shows readings that wander for minutes, a fault pattern regularly mistaken for a broken device.

For stubborn deposits, the fix depends on the cause:

✅ Fertiliser salts and limescale: briefly into dilute acid, then rinse thoroughly and regenerate for several hours in KCl solution.

✅ Grease and oil films: mild detergent in warm water, then rinse clean thoroughly.

✅ Organic deposits and biofilm: a commercial electrode cleaning solution. Never scrape anything off mechanically.

After any cleaning one rule holds without exception: recalibrate. A cleaned electrode has different characteristics from the dirty one your device was last set up for.

How to tell it is time for a new one

A pH electrode is a wear part and with good care typically lasts one to two years. Four signs point to a replacement:

✅ Calibration fails repeatedly or the device reports an error although the buffers are fresh.

✅ The reading takes forever to settle, noticeably longer than it used to on the same sample.

✅ The display jitters and will not come to rest even after minutes, despite clean rinsing.

✅ The junction stays discoloured or blocked even after cleaning and regeneration.

Before you throw it away, always check the simple causes first: old buffer solution, tap water for rinsing, a sample that is too cold. Those three explain more supposed electrode failures than actual wear.

Replace instead of discard

This is where the device you bought makes the difference. On the Apera PH20 Value pH pocket meter the electrode is built in, so at the end of its life the whole device is due. On the 60 series you unscrew it and fit a new one:

for the PH60: the Apera pH replacement electrode for PH60 (PH60-E)

for the PC60-Z: the Apera replacement electrode PC60-DE (for PC60-Z)

That is exactly why the step up to the premium class pays off for heavy users. The full calculation is in our comparison of the PH20 and the PH60.

pH Meters, pH & EC Meters

Apera pH replacement electrode for PH60 (PH60-E)

<del aria-hidden="true"><bdi>51,17 €</bdi></del> Original price was: 51,17 €.<ins aria-hidden="true"><bdi>49,99 €</bdi></ins>Current price is: 49,99 €.
Add to cart

The care routine in short

After every measurement: rinse with distilled water, dab dry, fit the cap with KCl solution.

Before every measuring day: a visual check. Topping it up costs cents, a new electrode costs many times that.

</details>
<details style="border: 1px solid #e5e7eb; border-radius: 8px; margin-bottom: 8px; overflow: hidden;">

What is the junction and why does it clog?

The junction is a small porous spot in the shaft through which the reference side keeps contact with the sample, usually visible as a lighter dot or ring. Salts, limescale, grease or biofilm can block the pores, at which point readings become unstable. Depending on the cause, dilute acid, mild detergent or a cleaning solution helps, followed by several hours of regeneration in KCl.

</details>
<details style="border: 1px solid #e5e7eb; border-radius: 8px; margin-bottom: 8px; overflow: hidden;">

May I wipe the glass membrane with a cloth?

Dabbing yes, rubbing no. Rubbing leaves fine scratches and charges the glass statically. A statically charged membrane shows readings that wander for minutes, a fault pattern often mistaken for a device defect. Take a soft, lint free cloth and only dab off the remaining moisture.

</details>
<details style="border: 1px solid #e5e7eb; border-radius: 8px; margin-bottom: 8px; overflow: hidden;">

How long does a pH electrode last with good care?

One to two years as a rule of thumb. What decides it is storage in KCl solution, rinsing after every use and the kind of samples involved, since heavily loaded or hot media shorten the life noticeably. Apera gives six months of warranty on the electrode and two years on the meter.

</details>

Most pH electrodes do not die of wear, they die of bad storage.
