Frequently Asked Questions
How accurate is the Apera PH20?
The PH20 measures pH from 0.0 to 14.0 with an accuracy of ±0.1 pH. That is more than enough for checking irrigation water and runoff in growing, where target windows such as 5.8 to 6.2 matter rather than the second decimal place. Automatic temperature compensation (ATC) corrects for temperature effects between 0 and 50 °C, so cold tap water and warm nutrient solution both read reliably. If you need ±0.01 pH for lab-grade work, step up to the PH60 from the premium series.
Do I need to calibrate the PH20, and how often?
Yes, like every pH meter. The matching calibration solutions (pH 4.01 and 7.00) are included in the box. Calibration takes about two minutes: dip the electrode into the buffer and the meter recognises the value automatically. For daily use in a grow we recommend calibrating every one to two weeks, and always before an important measuring session. Store the electrode wet, ideally in 3M KCl storage solution, and it will stay accurate for much longer.
Is the PH20 waterproof?
Yes. The housing is IP67 rated: it survives dust and temporary submersion down to one metre, and it even floats. If it drops into your reservoir, nothing happens. That makes it a perfect match for the humid environment of a grow tent or for measuring directly in a DrainMaster drip tray. After measuring, rinse the electrode briefly with distilled water and put the cap back on.
What is included in the box?
Everything you need to start measuring right away: the PH20 itself, calibration solutions (pH 4.01 and 7.00), four AAA batteries and a lanyard, all packed in a sturdy carrying case. Thanks to the 8-minute auto-off, the batteries last for months. Refill bottles of calibration solution (250 ml) are available in our shop.
Why measure pH when growing at all?
pH determines which nutrients your plant can actually absorb. Outside the target window (roughly 6.0 to 6.8 in soil, 5.8 to 6.2 in coco and hydro), individual nutrients lock out even though they are present in the solution, and you get deficiency symptoms despite feeding. Measuring both irrigation water and runoff, for example with the DrainMaster drip-tray system, reveals such problems before the plant shows them.
PH20 vs. PH60: which one should I buy?
The PH20 is the value model: ±0.1 pH accuracy, 0 to 14 range, fixed electrode. The PH60 is the premium class: ±0.01 pH, -2 to 16 range, a replaceable PH60-E electrode and a three-colour display. For hobby grows the PH20 is fully sufficient. The PH60 pays off if you want maximum precision or plan to use the meter for many years, because you simply replace a worn electrode instead of buying a new device.
