Frequently Asked Questions
What exactly does the EC20 measure and why do I need it?
The EC20 measures the electrical conductivity (EC) of your nutrient solution, which is the total concentration of dissolved salts and thus your nutrients. When growing, the EC value, alongside pH, is the most important control parameter: it tells you whether you are fertilizing too weakly or too strongly. It becomes particularly insightful if you also measure the drainage water, for example, from the DrainMaster drip tray. If the drain EC rises significantly above the feed EC, salt accumulates in the substrate, and it’s time to flush.
What’s special about the BPB electrode?
BPB stands for Brush-resistant Platinum Black, a brush-resistant platinum coating on the measuring electrode. Conventional platinum electrodes lose accuracy if the sensitive coating is touched or cleaned. The EC20’s BPB electrode tolerates cleaning and daily use much better and maintains its calibration more stably. This is the main reason why APERA Instruments EC meters remain more accurate than many cheaper alternatives.
How do I calibrate the EC20?
With 1- or 2-point calibration and automatic buffer recognition: simply immerse the electrode in the calibration solution (e.g., 1413 µS/cm, included in delivery), and the device automatically recognizes the target value. For growing, a single-point calibration with 1413 µS is perfectly sufficient. Calibrating once a month is usually enough; for intensive use, every two weeks.
How long does the EC20 run on one set of batteries?
Up to 1,000 hours with four AAA batteries, which are already included. The automatic shutdown prevents forgotten power-on from draining the batteries. This means battery changes are one of those things you practically never have to think about.
EC, TDS, PPM: what’s the difference?
All are terms for the same phenomenon: dissolved salts in water. EC is the direct physical measurement in mS/cm or µS/cm and is the international standard. TDS (in ppm) is an estimated value converted from EC, with different manufacturers using different conversion factors, which causes confusion. Our advice: work directly with EC, then your values will be comparable with any feeding chart and any forum. The EC20 displays EC directly.
